‘The Severn Rising 2222’ art workshop at Diglis fish pass and Diglis Island

Fast forward Worcester to the year 2222 and imagine a city submerged. For one day only, Unlocking the Severn hosts an exciting new art workshop, in collaboration with The Severn Rising 2222.

What will our city look like in 2222, if the River Severn rises and overtops rooftops? Use your imagination and creative skills to create a new watery landscape. In this workshop you will illustrate Fantastical Flora, Fauna, Funga and Fish using a variety of illustration techniques. You will learn some mark making techniques and create beautiful collages using a range of mixed-media.

Your creations will help shape a new environmental game: ‘The Severn Rising 2222’, produced by Sarah Millin (illustrator) and Andy Round (Paradise Multimedia) and funded by Arts Council England, which explores what different locations in Worcester might look like in a future where river levels are much higher than they are now.

The game will be launched at Worcester Art Gallery in the family activity room, alongside Meadow Arts ‘Watermarks’ exhibition in January 2023.

This workshop will be hands-on with lots of art materials to use, and you will also be able to contribute to designing some of the narrative of the new game. The event begins at Diglis Fish Pass and underwater viewing gallery to set the underwater scene!

Information about the event

The event will start at Diglis Fish Pass. Here you will have a tour of the fish pass and underwater viewing gallery, and we will be introduced to ‘The Severn Rising 2222’ game.

The rest of the workshop will take place on Diglis Island. We will walk round to the island as a group. The island is a 15 minute walk from the fish pass. Please note, there are no toilets at the fish pass, however there are facilities on the island.

Please dress appropriately for doing craft activities. There is the option of using inks, which may stain clothing. Also please note, the Victorian workshop can get cold, so bring extra layers with you.

This event is free and open to all, regardless of artistic ability! Adults and children are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
