To celebrate World Fish Migration Day on Saturday 21st May, we will be holding a special open day at Diglis Island and Diglis Fish Pass.  This event celebrates the amazing May Fish Migration on a historic year – as we have unlocked access to their traditional spawning grounds for the first time in nearly 180 years!

Members of the public will be able to find out more about the endangered twaite shad and their epic migration on the UK’s longest river. Diglis Island will be open so come and explore the Victorian lock gate workshop and find out more about Unlocking the Severn. On the opposite side of the river, we will open Diglis Fish Pass for you to see the structure up close. You will also have the chance to descend down into the belly of the fish pass, where the underwater viewing gallery gives the opportunity to see any wild fish swimming past!

The Unlocking the Severn team will be ready to welcome visitors at Diglis Island, and round at Diglis fish pass on the opposite side of the river. Both locations will be open from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm. No booking will be necessary, but please note there will be a ticketed queueing system in place at the fish pass to manage numbers in the viewing gallery.

Please be aware that we are limited to 15 people at a time in the viewing gallery. We provide tickets on the gate for each 20 min viewing slot, which are offered on a 1st come 1st served basis.

Facilities

There are toilet facilities on Diglis Island, but please note there are none at the fish pass. It is about a 15 minute walk from Diglis Island round to the fish pass.

Dogs

Due to the scientific monitoring equipment and to respect the wishes of all visitors, we cannot permit dogs into the underwater viewing gallery at this event. Well behaved dogs on a lead are allowed on the gantry above the fish pass.
