Glimmer is a community arts project that explores our connection to the River Severn and its wildlife. During 2020, Glimmer worked with communities and groups along the River Severn to produce decorative scales and collect audio and visual recordings that reflect people’s own experiences and thoughts about the river and the life within it.
The final sculpture and film were unveiled at the National Waterways Museum, Gloucester on 24 October 2020 to celebrate World Fish Migration Day. Creative Solutions is a partnership between filmmaker and photographer David Grange, and artist Jacqui Grange. They have collaborated for over 20 years to bring high quality, socially engaged projects to diverse locations and communities. Based in Gloucestershire they are regular visitors to the Severn, and David also volunteers with SARA, so this project is close to their hearts.
World Fish Migration Day is a global celebration of rivers and the migratory fish that inhabit them. Organisations from around the world organise events and activities with the aim of connecting fish, rivers and people.
Worcester is a key location for Unlocking the Severn.
Two of the River Severn fish passes will be constructed here.
At Diglis – engineers will install a deep vertical slot fish pass next to the weir.
This fish pass will also include an innovative underwater viewing gallery for monitoring the fish and providing a whole new perspective on life beneath the water.
We are also restoring a Victorian workshop on Diglis Island to provide a place for learning and exhibitions.
At Bevere – a 100m bypass-channel will be introduced with blocks and a shallow enough gradient for shad to swim around the weir.

Tewkesbury is an important location for monitoring shad as the Upper Lode Weir on the Severn Ham, is the only place on the River Severn you can easily observe shad, as they swim over a notch in the weir.
